Fringe Day 2

Day 2 in the bag some stunning and very wild performances been on the go for over 8 hours and totally knackered. 14 bands done so far including Red Rabbits, Be Quiet! Shout Loud, Performance, Lightning Seeds, Human League, Idiot Savant, Dirty Weekend, The Bicycle Thieves, John Power, British Sea Power, Calvin Harris.

Show highlight for me Lightning Seeds where superb, Human League put on a great show, Calvin Harris was just nuts and a wild croud. But the real stars for me where Dirty Weekend the best set I have seen them do, Be Quiet Shout Loud we superb with a cracking show for the crowd the lead singer what a showman well done guys. Idiot Savant very sharp with a cracking unique sound very raw, British Sea Power where totally off their rockers had the crowd going crazy where they got the trees from ? ???? ??

Well the real work begins for GrimLight as all the above images to work on and get finished so a couple of weeks hard work. We will be posting image highlight from the show as the work completes so watch this space.

Fringe Day 1

Day 1 of the Festival done shots in the bag include Be Quiet! Shout Loud, Performance, Lightning Seeds, Human League. More to come then the nightmare begins I have to work and process them all ? Feeling Fringe !

Well it's that time of year again. This post is the calm before the storm as GrimLight are proud to announce they are one of only a select view official photographers for the Stockton Fringe Festival.

We will be shooting the likes of Human League, Lighting Seeds, Calvin Harris, Mecury Rev and a hole host of other top bands.

So over the coming weeks you will be able to see highlights from the event here and exclusivley on our GrimLight blog. We are also hoping to put together a GrimLight Video Reel with highlight from this years show.

Capuchino Shoot How It Was Done

Capuchino Morning

GrimLight has been busy with a commercial shoot for a local Coffee Shop.  The brief was to create several shots around a cup of Capuchino with the use of strong neon colours.  Below are both the finished images.

Simple - Lynx Goes All Gel At The Knees

GrimLight has been busy putting together our first Step By Step video on how to shoot high quality commercial products shots with a very simple lighting setup.  Below are a sample of some of the shots from the video based around a product or packshot shoot around Simple Skin Defence Balm for men and the every popular Lynx Fever mens deodorant body spray. The shots where taken with a very simple setup including a LastoLite product tent, silver reflector, 1 Nikon SB800 Gelled with a Honl find diffuser grid,  another Nikon SB600 with a Sto Fen Diffuser and a Nikon D300 with a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG lense the lighting was triggered using Nikon CLS.

GrimLight TV On It's Way !

Breaking new as GrimLight TV is coming to you real soon.  GrimLight are launching a new GrimLight channel which will have step by step guides, hardware reviews, news reports and all sorts of other goodies.

GrimLight are intending to post video feeds over the coming months some of which will be posted here on our blog and others will be exclusive to GrimLightImages.

Flip Ultra HD

GrimLight have just taken delivery of the new Flip Ultra HD.  One of the biggest selling HD camcorders no tapes, cd's just records on the internal 8gb memory good for 2 hrs of 720p high defination video.  So coming soon will be video review of kit, hardware and all sorts of other goodies this will also include step by step guides and how to guides more on this a little later.

Video guides will be coming over the coming months so watch this space as GrimLight hits the TV.

Sigma Being Blue

Been busy doing some extra product shots this weekend based around the stunning Sigma 50mm f/1.4DG.  The shots where taken with a Nikon D300 with a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro lense and lighting was from several Nikon Strobes trigger with Nikon CLS.  Also this was test using several of Honl's strobist kit including gels and fine difusser grid.  GrimLight will be doing a review of this kit over the next couple of weeks.  Here are some of the finished work.

Smart Go In To The Deep

GrimLight have been busy playing around with several concepts for Smart the maker of the Smart For Two.  Simply brief put the car in water or under water so the image came about below.  There is a lot of post production work on this image with over 20 layers on the master photoshop file.

The original Smart car was just a plane grey colour with black trim highlights every thing in this image is hand drawn and pain staking put together.  The hardest part was to get the lighting and colour tones correct more to come on this project with GrimLight.

Honl Light DVD Review

Finally the long awaiting DVD from David Honl is here and has it been worth the wait?

First suprise is this is a dual DVD yes 2 discs not the usual 1 disc cash in like so many other blander photography DVD offerings.  So what makes this DVD so different first for those of you who don't know who David Honl is?  David Honl is regarded world wide for his work done as a photo journalist shooting all around the world and capturing some of the most historic events from on the front line.

Over the years David Honl has developed his own lighting modifying equipment with which to use with strobes / flash guns his lighting system add ons will work with any flash gun and they are both simple and very quick to use.  Best thing about David Honl's kit is it simply works and the results are as good as any other setup helping to produce images as good as any images you will see in any of the glossy magazines but at a fraction of the cost of the bigger brands and in most cases better YES! better results.

These DVD's are so informative and simply enthralling to watch.  David is both clear and precise with the information given and is helped by his stunning wife Claudia Christian.  David takes you through several shoots on these discs from exotic portraits to simple clean food shots nearly all bases are covered.

What makes this DVD really stand out is the breakdown section after each shoot where David recaps with a lighting setup walk through and a simple over head shot showing David drawing out the setup on a white board, simple, effective and very easy to understand and put into practice.  One of the biggest bug bares for me is how often photographers over complicate lighting and over do it with equipment when it is hardly ever needed.  This DVD simply proves this ethos.

If your looking into a DVD that will help, support, and explain how to get into wireless lighting and the world of strobist this is a must buy DVD.  It will also show you how to get top quality images with very simple setups and just how fantastic the Honl modifier system truly is.

I have been using David Honl's full system since David first starting making his range available to buy online.  I would not recommend another system for modifying flash guns as this is simple the best system available.  Yes there will be and are many copies of this system but buy the original and support David's system.

So in answer to my first question at the start of this review has this DVD been worth the wait ?  Put simply this is an essential purchase for any amateur or professional photographer and one of the very best photography DVD's out there on the market at present.  Also another bonus if your into Babylon 5 which I am a following Babylonian my self there are some fantastic insights during the informal chat with Bill Mummy.
